Expanded State of Consciousness Breathwork
Expanded state breathwork utilizes specific patterns of intentional, active breathing combined with evocative music. The session can last from 30 minutes to many hours depending on the facilitator and style.
There are many practices and techniques (e.g., breathwork, meditation, psychedelics) that can facilitate an individual entering into an expanded state of consciousness. You may also hear this referred to as non-ordinary or altered state of consciousness.
Some common types of breathwork that can induce expanded states of consciousness are Holotropic Breathwork, the Wim Hof Method, yogic pranayama, breath of fire used in Kundalini yoga, and Neuro Dynamic Breathwork.
How does it work?
Expanded state breathwork utilizes specific patterns of intentional, active breathing combined with evocative music. The session can last from 30 minutes to many hours depending on the facilitator and style. Expanded state breathwork can be done in individual sessions but it is oftentimes done in a group setting or class. The individual is lying down in a comfortable position with the facilitator nearby for physical and emotional support. For many people, the experience of time can be altered during the session, making it feel very short. There can be some mild discomfort that arises, especially at the beginning of the experience as the body acclimates to the breathing style, but the individual is in control and can choose to stop the breathing at any time and then return when comfortable. At the end of the session, people often report experiencing an emotional release and a sense of calm.
What is an expanded state of consciousness like?
Experiences and effects of an expanded state of consciousness can vary from person to person. Some common effects are vivid imagery, emotional release, a sense of interconnectedness, an increase in mental clarity, a feeling of calm or deep peace, profound insights and realizations, a sense of separateness from the ego, enhanced mind-body connection, increased self-awareness, and spiritual or mystical experiences.
What is the purpose of Expanded State of Consciousness Breathwork?
This style of breathwork allows the individual to process and release trauma from the mind and body by deactivating the sympathetic nervous system, bypassing the conscious mind, and allowing the individual to access emotion states that may otherwise be blocked. Through this process, the individual may also experience insights and lessons that can be integrated into their lives. Expanded state of consciousness breathwork can also be used for self-exploration, personal growth, as a spiritual practice to deepen connection with higher power, to enhance empathy and foster a feeling of connectedness with all beings, or to experience a sense of transcendence or bliss.
Like other routes to non-ordinary states of consciousness, this type of breathwork will not be suitable for everyone. It is essential to approach breathwork with respect and intention taking into consideration physical and mental health. The therapist or practitioner will work with you to assess the appropriateness for your individual case.

With a compassionate and loving approach, I focus on getting to the root cause of your challenges, addressing trauma and attachment wounds, and creating new patterns.
