Psychedelic Integration & Harm Reduction

Psychedelic integration & harm reduction are two important aspects of working with psychedelics. These components are intended to ensure that individuals who choose to use psychedelics do so safely, minimizing potential risks and maximizing the benefits of the experience.

**I provide psychedelic-informed integration and harm reduction therapy to those who are considering using psychedelics or have already used a psychedelic and need support integrating the experience. Psychedelic medicines (e.g., psilocybin mushrooms, MDMA, Ayahuasca, Bufo, LSD, etc.) are illegal in the state of California and federally. Ketamine is the only medicine approved for off-label use within the context of psychedelic-assisted therapy. I only provide Ketamine-Assisted Therapy at this time.

What is psychedelic harm reduction and integration?

Due to a variety of factors, including promising research examining the effectiveness of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy (PAP) for the treatment of trauma and other mental health issues, compassionate use approvals for psychedelic medicine within the context of PAP, widespread conversation within media surrounding psychedelics, the passing of legislation decriminalizing personal use in certain states, and law enforcement deprioritization, many people have started using psychedelics as a tool for healing and personal development.

Psychedelic harm reduction and integration are two important aspects of the psychedelic experience. These components are intended to ensure that individuals who choose to use psychedelics do so safely, minimizing potential risks and maximizing the benefits of the experience.

Harm Reduction

Harm Reduction involves education about the potential risks, effects, and benefits as well as providing information about contraindications that put the individual at greater risk of adverse effects  (i.e., specific mental illness and medical conditions). It also includes an exploration of safety precautions including how the substance is obtained, dosage to minimize the risk of adverse or overwhelming experiences, setting (physical and social environment), the intention and mindset of the individual, access to a trusted support person (sitter), and the use of other substances. A discussion surrounding legal status of psychedelics and the potential legal consequences of their use is also included in harm reduction.

Integration

Psychedelic experiences can be intense and profound. Integration involves working with a therapist or other knowledgeable professional to process the experience and incorporate the insights, realizations, and experience itself into daily life and address any unresolved challenges that may have surfaced during the experience. Integration can involve journaling and reflection to deepen understanding, engaging in art or other creative activities to further express and explore the insights, and practices to help the individual stay connected to the lessons and insights gained. Integration can also include exploration and conscious implementation of desired lifestyle changes that emerge from the new insights and assisting the individual in finding community connections that will further support the experience.
