Nature and Walk & Talk Therapy

Nature and walk and talk therapy align with a holistic approach to mental health care in that it draws upon the connection between physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, and environmental well-being.

“I only went out for a walk, and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in.” -John Muir

What is nature or walk & talk therapy?

This is just therapy that takes place outdoors, either sitting in nature or walking around. Nature and walk and talk therapy align with a holistic approach to mental health care in that it draws upon the connection between physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, and environmental well-being.

What are the Benefits of This Type of Therapy?

Simply being in a natural environment like a park, around trees or a garden, on a hiking trail, or at the beach can promote relaxation, reduce anxiety, and enhance mental health (even looking at an image of nature on a screen has been demonstrated to do this!).

Adding in movement can enhance the effects by further reducing stress, decreasing internal tension, improving mood, increasing alertness, supporting better sleep, and increasing an overall sense of well-being.

Moving the body moves the mind, so adding movement while talking is a wonderful tool for releasing stuck emotions and thoughts. Many people will have realizations or insights and experience new ways of thinking when engaging in this type of therapy.

And for some people, the more informal setting and shared activity can feel less intimidating and more relaxed than sitting face-to-face in a therapy office.

What about privacy and confidentiality?

Even though it is outdoors, nature and walking sessions are held in private areas, away from others. Confidentiality cannot be totally guaranteed as others may see the client and therapist together, but no one will hear what is being said. And to others, it just appears that two friends are talking.

Can we meet outside for every session?

Nature and walking therapy may not be suitable for everyone or for every session. Trauma treatments are not conducted during this type of therapy. Any limitations or concerns are discussed ahead of time to determine if this is the right fit.

What do sessions actually look like?

The therapist and client meet at an agreed upon location for an agreed upon activity (e.g., walk, hike, yoga, sitting on a park bench). While participating in the activity, therapy is conducted just as it would within the office. There can be flexibility in the length of the session, but it is typically the same amount of time as an office session.

With a compassionate and loving approach, I focus on getting to the root cause of your challenges, addressing trauma and attachment wounds, and creating new patterns.
